Creating a Credit Application
Make it Look Professional
This sounds trivial, but a professional looking document makes a difference. It is one of those things, the more professional looking the document, the more likely it is that you will not have to enforce it due to nonpayment.
There are many things you can do to increase the professional look of your credit application;
- DO NOT DOUBLE SPACE:
Most people were taught in school that a double space between every line is the only way to go for all of your writing. This could not be further from the truth. Make sure to put a double space between your paragraphs, but never between your lines of text. This will increase readability tenfold.
- Now that you have double-spaced between paragraphs I bet those indents look rather silly. It’s time to get rid of them!
- Add margins to decrease your line length. Since most paper is 8.5/11 inches, using the standard 6.5 font on this page size will result in a document that is stretched across the entire page. If you increase your margins significantly, your document will become much easier to read.
- This one might go against everything you have ever learned regarding document formatting, but you should use two different fonts. Try using a sans-serif font for the headings and a serif font for the body text! This shows an attention to detail that is sure to be apparent to your potential clients. It says “this person does not mess around, they care a lot about this credit application!”
As Robert Burns once said in the poem To A Mouse, “The best-laid schemes of Mice and Men Go oft awry.” There will always be clients to whom you loan credit to that will eventually go into debt on that line of credit.
